ABOUT LOUIS SHERRY: In 1881, Louis Sherry introduced the French chocolate-making tradition to New York and quickly established a reputation for excellence. Sherry’s dedication to quality is present today in every piece they craft. Only the highest quality ingredients, ethically sourced from Ecuador to Madagascar to the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, are used by their master chocolatier. In celebration of their heritage, each array of chocolates is packaged int he traditional Sherry’s tin, a recast of the original, now more than 100 years old.

Founded in 1881 by Louis Sherry, a pioneering New York restaurateur and confectioner, Louis Sherry Chocolates brought the elegance of French confectionery to the city during the height of the Gilded Age.

On the evening of his first shop opening, Sherry stood in the doorway, uncertain if New York was ready for such refinement. It was. His confections and hospitality were met with immediate acclaim, attracting a clientele drawn to his sense of taste, quality, and experience.

As the city evolved, so did Sherry’s presence—moving from Sixth Avenue to Fifth Avenue, and eventually to a flagship on Madison Avenue. From these storied addresses, his signature chocolate tins traveled far beyond New York, becoming symbols of luxury and discernment.

Today, the legacy lives in every detail. Each chocolate is crafted using ethically sourced ingredients from regions such as Ecuador, Madagascar, and Venezuela, maintaining a standard established over a century ago.

Presented in the house’s iconic tins—still cast from original molds—Louis Sherry Chocolates remain both a confection and a keepsake.

“When it’s a matter of good taste—Sherry’s.”
A founding promise that continues to define the brand today.

FAQ

May I return perfume?

Not really. It's important to test the perfume before you buy. We sell samples of nearly every perfume, so you can test it on your skin before you buy it, or you can come into the shop to try perfumes for free. Once you purchase a fragrance, it's yours forever.

Are your perfumes safe?

All perfumes sold at The Marie-Marie meet the highest safety standards in the world through the regulation of all cosmetic products sold in the European Union. Independent testing is performed regularly, and standards are updated yearly. All perfumes must meet these standards to be sold legally in this region. We work with each brand to ensure these standards are met and continue to be met annually.

May I book a private consultation?

Yes. Our private consultations require a $250 non-refundable deposit per person per hour, which applies to the fragrances you select that day or in the future. You will have the store to yourself, led by your dedicated perfume expert, who will guide your experience. The consultation is limited to parties of one to four people with a maximum of two hours.

When will Marie-Marie be in the store?

Our precious mascot, Marie-Marie, is learning how to be a shop dog and how to behave like a lady. This means she will be in the store a few hours a week until she can handle the excitement. If you are lucky, you might see her soon.

About Us

We Love You Portland!!!

The Marie-Marie is dedicated to Downtown Portland. We got lucky and found this perfect little store already set up to be a perfume store, so we added a coat of paint, and we're here to stay. We can't wait to meet you all and can't wait for you to wear your new fragrances to the next wrestling match, naked bicycle ride, rose garden walk, or just to stay at home and binge-watch Battlestar Galactica for the third time.

Not Our First Rodeo

Nicole has been working in fragrance since the 1990s at department stores and with her own line of candles. She opened her first perfume store in 2008 in Seattle and then a satellite location as a shop-in-shop here in Portland. Nicole and Henry are perfumers on their own and distribute many of the brands sold at The Marie-Marie.

The Real Marie-Marie

Marie-Marie Tropicana Spider Aesoph is Nicole and Henry's French Bulldog and our store mascot. She is two years old, small for her breed, with a blocky head, a funny long body, and a pouty lower lip. She likes eating farm-fresh greens and can have up to eight blueberries a day. She also loves perfume. We hope you get to meet her soon.
