THE ROYAL FIGUERIE

At the very core of this hub of horticultural innovation
lies the Royal Figuerie (or Fig Tree House). It was commissioned by Louis XIV with a clear purpose: to grow fig trees so he could enjoy one of his favorite fruits all year long, including out of season.

A pavilion built by Jules-Hardouin Mansart under La Quintinie’s architectural direction, the Figuerie is one of the garden’s jewels and a marvel of ingenuity. It combines a winning trio: architecture, microclimate, and horticulture.

Grown in pots, the King’s fig trees enjoyed the greenhouse’s
warmth in winter, and the heat reflected by the château’s walls
during fair weather, allowing for year-round harvesting. Thanks to the Figuerie’s exceptional architecture, the figs,
produced year-round, exuded a distinctive, unprecedented scent.

In spring, aromas of fresh leaves, tree resin, damp earth
and perfumed humidity would escape from within.

AN EXCEPTIONAL GARDEN

At the genesis of the King’s Vegetable Garden, an extraordinary, showcase of French horticultural expertise for 350 years, stands a visionary man: Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, a lawyer by training, turned agronomist (1624–1688). At the request of Louis XIV, he was the architect
of the Garden’s construction (between 1678 and 1683)
at the heart of the royal estate of Versailles.

A technical feat for its time, the King’s Vegetable Garden
was created on a marshy area sometimes called “the stinking pond” that La Quintinie drained to make fertile and suitable for cultivation.

Today, this remarkable cultural garden,
a 9-hectare symbol of the splendour and power
of Louis XIV’s court, is listed as a Historic Monument
and recognised as UNESCO World Heritage.

FAQ

May I return perfume?

Not really. It's important to test the perfume before you buy. We sell samples of nearly every perfume, so you can test it on your skin before you buy it, or you can come into the shop to try perfumes for free. Once you purchase a fragrance, it's yours forever.

Are your perfumes safe?

All perfumes sold at The Marie-Marie meet the highest safety standards in the world through the regulation of all cosmetic products sold in the European Union. Independent testing is performed regularly, and standards are updated yearly. All perfumes must meet these standards to be sold legally in this region. We work with each brand to ensure these standards are met and continue to be met annually.

May I book a private consultation?

Yes. Our private consultations require a $250 non-refundable deposit per person per hour, which applies to the fragrances you select that day or in the future. You will have the store to yourself, led by your dedicated perfume expert, who will guide your experience. The consultation is limited to parties of one to four people with a maximum of two hours.

When will Marie-Marie be in the store?

Our precious mascot, Marie-Marie, is learning how to be a shop dog and how to behave like a lady. This means she will be in the store a few hours a week until she can handle the excitement. If you are lucky, you might see her soon.

About us

Not Our First Rodeo

Nicole has been working in fragrance since the 1990s at department stores and with her own line of candles. She opened her first perfume store in 2008 in Seattle and then a satellite location as a shop-in-shop here in Portland. Nicole and Henry are perfumers on their own and distribute many of the brands sold at The Marie-Marie.

The Real Marie-Marie

Marie-Marie Tropicana Spider Aesoph is Nicole and Henry's French Bulldog and our store mascot. She is one year old, small for her breed, with a blocky head, a funny long body, and a pouty lower lip. She likes eating farm-fresh greens and can have up to eight blueberries a day. She also loves perfume. We hope you get to meet her soon.

We Love You Portland!!!

The Marie-Marie is dedicated to Downtown Portland. We got lucky and found this perfect little store already set up to be a perfume store, so we added a coat of paint, and we're here to stay. We can't wait to meet you all and can't wait for you to wear your new fragrances to the next wrestling match, naked bicycle ride, rose garden walk, or just to stay at home and binge-watch Battlestar Galactica for the third time.

a hotel, a cocktail, a dream

Ambré

Imagine yourself in a world so breathtaking where beauty rushes in from all directions, filling your heart with awe and delight. Each moment wraps you in a warm, quiet embrace that makes you feel loved and safe. But there’s more— beneath this serenity, there’s a pulse of strength. You feel so powerful. It feels as if everything that surrounds you, with all its complexity, lies at your feet, waiting for you to shape its destiny. Whatever you dream, the world will follow.

When getting lost in Ambré, each of us finds ourselves in a different place and time. What connects us is the air infused with the relaxing note of cacao, touched by a sprinkle of paprika and a hint of rum that keeps the spirit of adventure alive. Soft trails of dried fruits and oakwood settle around you, steadying your heartbeat once more. A flow of vanilla absolute and Indian sandalwood lingers, grounding you in comfort, while myrrh stirs an ancient strength.
